Welcome to my ramblings
Paradise (Season 1)
I don't really have much to say that won't entirely spoil the concept of this show, so I'll just say I think it rocks and you should watch it if you haven't. I kept up with it as it released weekly and I was leaning on the edge of my seat most of the time. The cast is great, the characters are pretty interesting (in my humble opinion, as someone who loves multifaceted, flawed characters), and it delves into a few very real, very possible scenarios of the near future. Again, I can't say much without just spoiling the whole premise that is only supposed to be revealed by the end of the first episode, but give it a chance please please please. Besides the whole central murder mystery, there are very interesting moral dilemmas being explored in the show that may not be immediately clear from the trailer. I need to know what happens next so I'm on my knees hoping this is renewed and everything comes to some sort of resolution.

7 Days To End With You
I got this game on Steam after I saw a few game recommendations on instagram. I thought the premise was pretty interesting so I was very excited to try! I'm a language and linguistics nerd so this seemed very much up my alley.
If you've never heard of this game, it's basically a short story in which you wake up with no memories and there's a stranger looking after you. You don't remember any words at all so this stranger will point them out to you as you explore the objects around the house and from there you can start to deduce words and keep a useful log as you play, figuring out your situation little by little. Do I recommend this game? Sure, if you are in the mood for a new experience and the concept calls out to you. It only takes a couple of hours to piece the story together and I found it interesting. However, it didn't really get me in a completionist mood and I ended up searching for some details online as I didn't feel like replaying the seven days over and over to get the entire picture.
Overall, it was nice, but it will probably just remain as a random memory of an afternoon I spent puzzling out a language. From my perspective, as I was expecting more from the whole language decoding angle, it was slightly underwhelming, although the story is cool. If you don't mind a couple (non-plot related) spoilers, read ahead for more details.
After piecing together the words for days, sizes, colors and a few objects, I was feeling a little frustrated with how sentence structures still didn't seem to make sense, so I ended up looking up a guide to find out more about the language. I found a post stating it follows the regular alphabet to spell words and a caeser cipher to shift letters around. With that piece of information, I decided to simply decode every word on my log after my first confusing playthrough. I got a notebook and wrote down the entire alphabet in order from the words I was sure I already had gotten right and used a cipher decoding website. About an hour later or so, I could begin a new playthrough without the language bareer and focus on getting a new ending and figuring out the details just so I could put the game to rest. I immediately got a little annoyed though, because now it was clear that the sentence structure was indeed really wack and she was doing caveman talk in hopes to simplify the sentences. Does that make sense in context, given she is talkin to a completely lost amnesiac? Sure. Does that make it a whole lot harder and confusing to get direct equivalents to the words she's using? Well, yes! I found it very frustrating. Yeah, I could still deduce color and size from comparing objects in the house, but I don't see why the word order couldn't just be "big red book" or something rather than whatever the hell was going on in this game. I'm not trying to be extremely critical though, I still think it was a cool concept and well executed for the most part, I just want to point out why it partially let me down due to my own built-up expectations.
As for the plot, I didn't end up playing every single possible scenario, but I read through every ending guide. I don't think you need to chase after every detail after you got the gist of what's going on, though. There really isn't much to do in the game besides unraveling the mystery of who and where you are, everything after that will just come from curiosity and, in my opinion, doesn't add that much to what you already know.

Challengers (2024)
I'm aware that I'm very late to the party on this one. I already missed all the memes to come out of this and don't really know how good most people found it, but I had a damn blast. It was very entertaining :D The soundtrack was super addictive and some shots were really impressive, I really liked the scene in the storm with the big billboard in the back. [Spoilers ahead]
Usually "open" endings are not my friends, but in this particular case I'm glad I'm allowed to imagine whatever dynamic shift I want for these three, so I couldn't even be mad at how it ended. Another thing I'm not really a massive fan of is painfully obvious elements or stories that pop up randomly in conversation to serve as foreshadowing but really just feel like whoever made the movie didn't have faith in the viewers to put two and two together without laying it on really thick. However, considering the ending depended a lot on the audience understanding the reference to Art's serving tick, I think the foreshadowing here was executed flawlessly. You can read it on Patrick's face and see what he's going to do from a mile away, but the pace of the scene and its implications just made it feel really bold and exciting rather than predictable. I also chuckled at the Art's grandma mentions (poor woman, though).
I also want to praise the character writing. To me, Tashi was a really complex character, not because I couldn't grasp her personality or predict her actions, but because her motivations and driving force are so different from my own it makes her fascinating in my eyes. She saw through both of the boys immediately, understanding their deep bond and not really planning to mess with it until she had a messy breakup with Patrick. And you know what? I think she was perfectly justified to do whatever she pleased. In her defense, she was always presented as a sort of reward for the boys, be it when she promised to give her number to whoever won a match or when Patrick made it clear that it was fair game for Art to continue shooting his shot after that. Both boys understood that her interest in them was always partially conditioned by their success, both in tennis or in getting her attention whenever they could. Although I don't really condone infidelity, their relationship and dynamic is so complex that it almost felt like an implicit understanding; slack off, and you might lose her.
I thought it was really interesting how interconnected their relationships and tennis were, consistently mixed up in conversation and used as weapons in their verbal matches. This made it really exciting for me to see the other side of the coin, how personal it got on the last scene when it's a physical match and they have an entire conversation through body language and silent glances. Again, I wasn't necessarily cheering for their actions, but it was really comical how the climax of the scene wasn't a serve, missed point, injury, etc, but a childish comeback such as "regardless of the game, I already slept with her, so suck it". That's cold, but after Art was all big talk in the sauna, fair game. Hard to argue your buddy is a loser when he's almost beating you and your wife still thinks about him. Anyways, great movie.

I Saw the TV Glow (2024)
I wanna preface my commentary by saying this movie's genre is not really my thing. That's not to say that I don't get it or can't appreciate psychological horror in general, but since I don't usually gravitate towards these movies I don't have a lot of other stuff I could compare it to, so I wouldn't know how well the execution of creepiness and suspense stands in comparison to other movies in the genre. I'd like to point out that I found this movie visually stunning, though, and I'd say it was worth the watch even if it's a bit out of my comfort zone.
I saw a few reviews dunking on it for being categorized as a horror, but I'm pretty sure they just mean they were expecting jumpscares or more explicitly scary material. I honestly believe that's quite a narrow and reductive definition of horror, and I had no issue identifying the elements that would make this so. This movie is uncomfortable, unsettling and suspenseful and made me feel utterly helpless and claustrophobic the whole time, so it more than fit the bill for me.
I also saw mixed reviews regarding the main theme/allegory. I think it's perfectly understandable for trans people to feel a certain way when presented with this mostly negative portrayal of the trans experience, and it's also not shocking that other people related and found it a faithful representation of all the consequences of repression. Frankly, even if it's not the greatest trans allegory of all time, I think it's an earnest attempt at one, and that's all it's gotta be. I believe we need space for stories like this, happy and sad and inbetween, if we want to live in a world where the queer experience is vastly recorded in all the shapes it can take, much like corny straight romcoms that get to just keep on being made, keep on standing as themselves alone, without the need to be compared to every other straight portrayal or live up to an ideal. I think this movie should be spared from shouldering all the responsibility of being the perfect representation of the experience it is trying to portray, as it's just one of them (hopefully, one day, one of many). I'm glad I watched it.

The Story of Pearl Girl
The Story of Pearl girl is a 40 episode chinese historical fiction drama about a girl that escapes from the pearl farm she's been forced to work in ever since she was captured as a child.
I usually don't watch historical dramas since I learn mandarin and usually prefer to consume contemporary stuff that will teach me modern vocabulary and slang, but I'm glad I made an exception for this one! Although I've seen tons of dramas and Zhao Lusi is like a mega known star, this is the first drama of hers I've seen and I'm definitely a new fan now.
This was completely different from the previous dramas set in the past that I've watched, which usually also had elements of fantasy and focused on cultivation or just pertained to different societal classes, be it officials or high society families. This drama focused on the daily life of merchants instead, with several plots revolving around investments, business strategies and betrayals that had me glued to the screen at all times. [Spoilers ahead!]
I'm completely over the typical love triangle plot, specially when most of the time you can't conceive how the main characters go their whole life completely unnoticed and are just now being introduced to that sort of romance and excitement, and then they immediately just suddenly find themselves between two perfectly good candidates fighting over them. However, I was surprisingly not mad at how this trope was presented this time. For one, she's an insanely cool character and I'd like to join the line for her affection too, and secondly there was no relying on the annoying back and forth, jealousy, competitiveness, etc. There were always a few different, more relevant things going on too, which balanced everything out. Zhang Jinran shot his shot, missed, and continued to show up for her and respect her decision, never coming up with ploys for attention. Despite their flaws, all of the characters have strong moral compasses and self respect. In fact, Zhang Jinran's refusal to bend the rules or turn a blind eye to things in pursuit of personal gain made him one of my favorite characters of all time. He knew exactly when and which risks to take and was relentless in the fight for justice.
Romance aside, the rest of the interpersonal relationships are all deeply touching. Friendship and compassion are major themes in this drama, particularly between the female characters. After all the insane ploys and ups-and-downs, Duanwu is painfully aware of the challenges of attempting to be a self-made woman in their society, and builds a community where women can rely on each other rather than marriage or sponsors.
I was quite shocked by the ending, but I can't say it didn't make sense or didn't fit with the themes the drama was focusing on the entire time. I feel like a woman who can pick herself up from grief and continue to provide for herself and all the people she cares about to the best of her abilities can't be said to be a bad ending. After Wu's death, she encouraged Cui Shijiu to do exactly that, and when the time came, she was ready to do the same for herself. Overall I thought it was a great drama, heartbreaking at times but very suspenseful and entertaining.

Conclave (2024)
I'm not a movie expert by any means, but I feel confident in believing this was a good movie. When it comes to movies, even though it's a very visual medium, I engage mostly with the script and ideas when it comes to my analysis, and all the technicalities are sort of secondary to that, but I have to say this was just a gorgeous visual experience. Not because of the sets themselves (for the most part, all of those rooms seem depressing, naked and oddly sterile smelling), but I had the constant feeling that the rooms were talking, each angle and corner handpicked to transmit a sense of dread, or urgency, emptiness, superficiality, and the list goes on.
The plot itself was endlessly entertaining to me. It's no taboo by now that people love to pry and gossip, and I found myself leaning closer to my screen as if I was about to listen to the tea of the century multiple times. Of course, what with the characters representing symbols of purity and righteousness, it feels all the more scandalous to find out about their hidden past. There are many themes that can be explored within this movie, but I'll just bring up the one thing that was stuck in the back of my mind, a striking combination of comical and sad (since it's far from being restricted to the universe of this one movie): the hypocrisy of it all. This was not a subtle message by any means, most of the candidates had glaring flaws and that made for a fair amount of snorts and chuckles throughout. But it really was something to lean back and squint at the realization of where all those people's priorities lie. Adeyemi's chances at becoming the next Pope were extinguished because he slept with a woman 30 years back, a woman who birthed his child, both of whom he abandoned to resume his post. Apparently, for such righteous people, between breaking a vote of celibacy and child abandonment, the former is a bigger offense. People were otherwise fine with appointing this violent homophobe, as long as he wasn't a rule breaker, of course. But Tremblay showed us these rules can apparently also bend a little, provided you line the right pockets :-) I hope Dante was right about the 8th Circle of Hell.
I wasn't shocked by any of their behavior, by the way. Thankfully, criticism towards organized religion is not a new concept. However, it does make my blood boil a little to be reminded of such realities. I particularly enjoyed Benitez's speeches, since deep down I want to believe there are people whose faith pushes them to be kinder. Sinning is human, none of those people are free of it, and they are well aware of it. But they forget you stay within the lines because God is love and understanding, God is empathy and brotherhood, not because a clean record puts you on the fast track to his private club. I hate to say but... this is the Greed they talk about in the Bible.

FIRST POST!
Hello! I'm still very much a beginner at html (I'm talking literally 3 or 4 days) so this has been a journey. It might be a while until everything falls into place and I can present a website I'm really proud of but for now please enjoy the hard work I've put in so far!
The only thing I can think of to comment right now is that if you are a fan of music group survival shows you should definitely tune in to Chuang Asia S2 which is currently ongoing! You can watch for free and vote for your favorite trainees on the WeTV app. So far I've voted for Thi-o, Yao Zihao and Hu Yetao (although I'm not caught up on the third episode yet). If you do watch, let me know who you're supporting!
